"If there's one thing I want to teach actors, it is that an artist has two best friends, himself and the play."

Dennis Davies' Scene Class

SCENE CLASS

How do you teach an artist to be an artist? It seems like a contradiction in terms because to some extent it is.
There is no mistake when we see something that moves us, that touches us in a personal way...we know it when we see it. Acting for oneself is not much different than that...we know it when we do it. When actors are in contact with their own creative voice they do not work for a feeling or emotion because they are focused on what they are doing. Too often trying to be real is mistaken for working for a feeling or expressing an emotion but that is not what great acting is. Great actors create and live in an imaginary world; they transform into a character that only they are capable of creating. This is a fundamental reality between an actor and the play.
Frequently actors never have an opportunity to develop or explore their imagination, their talent, because they are rushed into a result by circumstance or habit. We live in an instant gratification culture and it is sadly too often reflected in an actors' work in production, audition, rehearsal, and training.
Through the Organic Creative Process, actors make claim to their creative life and develop their skills in such a personal way that in the long run they go further creatively in less time than they may have realized possible. After all, the best actors always surprise everyone even themselves. A creative process is intuitive and done deliberately, consciously. When actors are given an opportunity to work on and create the imaginary world of the play and their character they no longer work for an intellectual idea or feeling, but from a personal, intuitive, creative life-force. This is one of the fundamental processes every creative artist shares because every artist has something personal to say because of their own life-experience is expressed in their art. In this class you will have an opportunity to develop yours.
